Fossils are old! Fossils are remains of plants or animals that lived a long, long time ago, like millions of years ago! Some are so old, they were from dinosaurs.
Fossils can be bones, but not always! Sometimes fossils are just footprints or even poop! Scientists call it “coprolite” (which is a funny word for dino poop!).
Fossils don’t always look like what you think. If you find a fossil of a shell or a leaf, it might not be the original plant or animal. It’s more like a mold or a copy of it, made when it got stuck in mud and turned hard over time.
Fossils can be tiny. Not all fossils are big. Some of the smallest fossils are really tiny bugs trapped in amber (tree sap that turned into solid rock).
Fossils can be everywhere! You don’t have to go to a museum to see fossils. You can find them in your back garden, or at the beach if you look carefully!
Not all fossils are dinosaurs! There are fossils of fish, plants, insects, and even ancient trees. Fossils show us all kinds of life from the past.
